Around 19-21 months, your toddler will be able to develop rote counting skills (e.g., counting from one to five) rather than rational counting skills (e.g., “How many fingers are there?”).
Practice with Our Toddler Activity "One-to-Five":
- Start by inviting your toddler to be the counter", and tell them you’ll be the “finger holder.”
- Raise each finger one at a time, and ask them to tell you which number it is.
- Take turns counting and being the “finger holder” so they can play both sides.
- Be patient. This will take time.
