3 Things We Didn't Know About Pumping as a First-Time Mom

3 Things We Didn't Know About Pumping as a First-Time Mom - Curious Baby Cards

First of all, we're firm supporters of the mantra "fed is best", so no matter what you've chosen to do with your baby, we're here for you! No judgement.

But if you've chosen to breastfeed, you may be wondering how to get started or how to prepare for 'pumping'. It's so common to not have any idea how to get started postpartum and so we'll help share a few tips to getting started.

Why do moms pump?

Breastfeeding and pumping often go hand-in-hand in a new mother's journey because it has so many benefits. When you're breastfeeding, it's a full-time job. Your body keeps you on the clock and it learns to produce the right amount of milk based on your baby's feeding schedule.

It's not easy to "skip" a feed with your little one without affecting your milk supply, so in order to take a break or skip a feed, many mothers choose to pump. This enables mom to be able to store breastmilk in the fridge so that a spouse, partner or caregiver can help out with the feedings. In turn, mom can try and catch a nap or get out of the house to visit a friend for lunch and baby will stay fed and happy.

Another benefit of pumping is that it enables mom to store extra milk for the future. If you're a working mom that travels or perhaps you just want to take a vacation away from your baby, you can store your milk through pumping beforehand. If you've stored up enough milk in a freezer, then you can continue to serve your baby breastmilk while continuing to keep your supply at the same level.

How long does pumped milk last?

Pumped milk can be stored easily in milk bags, reusable containers, or in glass jars and can last quite a while when frozen.

  • According to the CDC, breastmilk will typically stay fresh at room temperature for up to 4 hours (vs 1 hour for most formula).
  • When stored in the refrigerator, it can last for up to 4 days, and in the freezer for about 6 months.
  • Although if you're using a deep freezer, then it can last up to 12 months. (Source, CDC)

You're not alone if you're totally lost

As a new mom, we've all had silly questions early-on in our breastfeeding journeys.  I remember when I discovered the existence of a hands-free pumping bra, and how that was a total game-changer for me. Can you imagine (looking back now) if you had to pump without one 🤦‍♀️?

The 3 things we didn't know

During a conversation with Nickey, the founder of Junobie Bags, we put our heads together to create this simple one-sheeter with a few key things you’ll want to know before you begin your pumping journey.
